Assistant Managing Editor Ashley Lutz will be the next editor in chief of The Post, succeeding current editor Rick Rouan who is graduating in June.
Lutz, a junior studying journalism from Fairfield, Ohio, began working at The Post as a copy editor and reported on campus and culture staffs during 2006-07. Lutz became the culture senior writer last year, and was promoted to assistant managing editor this fall.
She interned at the JournalNews in Hamilton, Ohio, during both the summer of 2007 and 2008. Lutz will intern at The Columbus Dispatch this summer.
The Post can do more to build a bridge between us and our readership
Lutz said, adding she hopes to diversify coverage as well as improve the immediacy of online coverage.
Rouan said that Lutz's extensive reporting experience and ability to forge newsroom relationships contributed to the decision to select her as editor.
Things I was considering were reporting experience the ability to lead ability to foster good interpersonal relationships and the ability to be the voice of The Post
Rouan said. Ashley possesses all of those qualities.
The other applicant was current Associate Editor Natalie DeBruin, who is also a junior studying journalism.
I make news decisions every day
and this was the hardest decision I have ever made as editor of The Post
Rouan said. Natalie was a great leader on the opinion page
and that could have really transferred to the newsroom.
The editor of The Post is selected and hired by the Post Publishing Board and reports back to them each quarter on the status of the paper. As editor, Lutz will make $150 a week and will choose the paper's section and executive editors.
The publishing board consists of four faculty members, four students including Rouan, three administrators and one community member.
Rouan served four quarters as editor, taking over when then-editor Matt Zapotosky left for The Washington Post at the end of Winter Quarter last year.
I think that Rick and the staff this year has done an incredible job of improving credibility. I'm proud to be a part of this paper
Lutz said.
