Cleveland State met with presidential candidate in secret, PD reports

The Plain Dealer reports today on how the hiring of the new Cleveland State University president highlights the differences between the standards for privacy for public job candidates in different states.

Ronald Berkman, who was a finalist for the presidency at both CSU and Florida International University, got the executive treatment — CSU staffers shooing away reporters while Berkman traveled in back stairwells to secret meetings with trustees — in Cleveland, according to The Plain Dealer.

But Florida was a different story, the paper writes. In fact, candidates for the FIU job attended public forums.

The Post has gone rounds with Ohio University on major transparency problems, but, to its credit, the university does tend to use public forums for big-time job candidates. The three finalists to replace Kathy Krendl as provost will visit campus for open forums.

Forum Schedule

  • Susan Carlson, associate provost for faculty advancement and diversity at Iowa State University (3:30-4:30, May 4, Computer Service Center 121B)

  • Pam Benoit, vice provost for advanced studies and dean of the Graduate School at the University of Missouri (3:30-4:30, May 5, Morton Hall 201)

  • Nat Frazer, dean of the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University (3:30-4:30, May 8, Bentley Hall 240)
