Former comic educates students on greater, safer sex

Maria Falzone, who's from a suburb of Washington D.C., started out as a stand-up comic. Along her way she was introduced to sex education, and since then Falzone has been traveling and teaching students how to have great, safe sex. Falzone spoke with Post

reporter Jane Adams about talking about sex and getting some laughs along the way.

The Post: Why did you get started giving sex talks?

Maria Falzone: I did the HBO Aspen Comedy

Festival, and this women came up to me and said, You would be really great doing what I do.' I said

What do you do?' and she said, I am a sex educator.' ... Then I created Sex Rules!

Post: Can you tell me a little bit about Sex Rules!?

Falzone: It's a way to greater and safer sex. It's really a sex-positive message. How do you know when you are ready to have sex what do you need to do to have great sex how do you have great

safer sex. So

it is really a how-to.

Post: Why do you like doing this for a living?

Falzone: Because I make a difference in people's lives

so that is really fulfilling to me. If I can prevent someone from being sexually assaulted

from getting a STD or showing people to go ahead and talk to their children about sex

then that's great. If I can go ahead and say to them

Listen, when you become a parent, you start talking to your kid about sex.' I am done with people being ashamed about sex. In our society, sex is in the dark. We don't have any information - it's secretive and nasty shit that grows in the dark. I

really want to bring sex into the light. I think people should talk about it.

Post: How do you connect with the students?

Falzone: I think students feel it when someone is just being open and honest and talking straight to them ...

Post: Do you have any words of wisdom for the readers?

Falzone: People will ask me, How do I know when I am ready to have sex?' You have to ask yourself if you can have sex with the lights on and the sheets off. No more sex in the dark

groping for things. Can you look at your partner and tell them what you want

when you want

why you want it and how you want it? If you can't do that
