Ohio University senior Hannah Levy knew it was going to be warm this weekend so she and her roommates devised a way to stay cool Saturday at High Fest: a kiddie pool for partygoers to stand in and cool off.
Levy, who studies visual communications, was not the only person on High Street to have this idea; many children's pools graced the street as the temperatures reached the upper 80s, a record high for the month. However, the warm temperatures did not deter people from coming out to the streetwide party.
The heat was nice
but man it's hitting me now said John Romah, who came down from Akron to visit friends.
The Athens Police Department sent patrol cars down the street periodically and they had two officers assigned to the fest during the night shift, Lt. Anthony Fish said. Besides a few complaints about noise and obscene lyrics, the fest did not cause any problems, he said.
No one lost an eye and ... (that has) happened at High Fest before he said.
Representatives from the Athens Fire Department were also at High Fest and talking to students to ensure safety.
We always try to check on fests
but we have never stood out on the corner and talked to students before
fire Lt. Bob Rymer said.
Firefighters were concerned about the number of people sitting on roofs, Rymer said. He had tried to tell some people to get down, but the partiers did not listen, he said.
Partygoers listened to bands, played games like Wiffle Ball and corn hole, went down slip-and-slides and spent time with friends.
This is prime people-watching
said Annette Crowell, a sophomore studying early childhood education.
Several bands played, including a few from outside of Athens.
The Know Nothings, a band from Akron that was in town to record and to play a show on Friday, decided to play at High Fest just a few hours beforehand, said lead singer Kyle Buckley.
Local bands like Two EB, which has played at Palmerfest, also performed.
They are a very hardworking band. They're awesome
said Renee Constantino, who graduated from OU last year.
I live for these fests
she added.
