Local bands unite to raise autism awareness

Athens-based funk bands will rock the town at the second annual Athens Rocks for Autism benefit concert and silent auction tonight at Baker Center Ballroom.

Hosted by the Autism Society of America Southeastern Ohio Chapter, The Royales and The Jazz Cream Assassins will be headlining the event of philanthropy and fun.

Dubbing themselves those funkin' kings of rock 'n soul

The Royales are a rhythm and blues ensemble with a townie motif and lots of soul. Known for performing a plethora of cover songs while showcasing several original tunes, the band is celebrating 13 years of funk self-described as Of by and for Athens and best appreciated on the dance floor.

Roman Warmke, bass player and business manager of The Royales, said that Rock for Autism is one of two causes the band will be playing for this year, and that he's looking forward to meeting with the community, seeing friendly faces and just having a good time.

The Jazz Cream Assassins, another local funk ensemble, is also scheduled to rock the event with its bluesy feel and self-acclaimed face-melting sound.

According to Margaret Hutzel, treasurer of ASA SE Ohio, the event will raise money for the local chapter and, more specifically, its summer program for special needs children. Other portions will go toward scholarships for autistic children and training for parents and professionals.

We want to raise awareness and help educate people about what autism is all about

Hutzel said. Autism is a complex neurobiological developmental disorder affecting one in every 150 children; there is no known cause.

Hutzel said she's most looking forward to seeing people have fun for a good cause. For more information, go to: http://www.autismseohio.org/rock2.
