OU student dies after falling from window

An Ohio University sophomore died yesterday after falling from the fourth floor of his residence hall Tuesday night.

Eric Hansen, who studied engineering, fell from the upper-half of a window in Weld House on South Green a little before midnight Tuesday night. He was moved by Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Services to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, according to the Ohio University Police Department.

Hansen then was transported to Grant Medical Center in Columbus where he died at 1:39 p.m. yesterday, hospital officials said.

Hansen, 20, lived in Seven Hills, Ohio, and graduated from Normandy High School in Parma, Ohio.

OU police are investigating the cause of the fall, OU Police Chief Andrew Powers said.

We are still in the fact-gathering phase

said Powers, adding that the cause of death is still unknown.

It's just too soon Powers said. It would be premature. It would be strictly speculative.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact OU police at 593-1911.

OU assembled counselors last night to talk with Weld House residents about the incident. Counseling is available through Counseling and Psychological Services at 593-1616.

Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi has been in contact with Hansen's parents and close friends, trying to support them in this time.

My deepest thoughts and condolences go out to his family and all of his friends Lombardi said.
