A registered sex offender seen on Ohio University's campus last week was taken into custody for a parole violation Friday.
Oren Apple, 31, who was permanently banned from campus, now is in Southeast Ohio Regional Jail. OU police issued a crime alert after Apple was seen at the music building, Alden Library and the Radio/Television Communications Building.
We got some reports from people in the community who knew who he was
OU Police Chief Andrew Powers said.
Apple, of New Straitsville, was indicted with attempted rape and two counts of kidnapping in April 2001 for attacking an art student in Seigfred Hall, according to the Athens County Court of Common Pleas. The student was working on an art project when Apple struck her with a paint bucket. She stabbed Apple with an exacto knife, causing him to flee the room, according to the March 2001 police report.
The state dismissed the count of attempted rape as part of a plea agreement in October 2001, according to Athens County Court of Common Pleas records. Apple was released on parole in November after spending seven years in the Ross Correctional Institution.
Apple remains under supervision, which requires him to obey all laws and inform his supervising officer of any resident or employment changes, until November 2013. Apple also is registered as a Tier II sex offender for kidnapping a victim over 18. Tier II sex offenders must register their residence, place of employment, school enrollment, vehicle and internet accounts with the county sheriff every 180 days for 25 years, said Molly Burchfield, a social worker with the Athens Police Department.
Tier II offenses include compelling prostitution, gross sexual imposition with a minor under 13 years old, kidnapping and felonious assault with a sexual motivation, Burchfield said. Of the three-tier system implemented in 2008, Tier III sex offenders face the strictest restrictions for the most serious crimes. 1
