Like a barely known acquaintance, Ohio University Police may start friend requesting students on Facebook.
Chief Andrew Powers said he is floating the idea of establishing a Facebook page for University Police next year, one that could inform students of crime alerts, general
safety tips and department events.
I guess it would be another way for students to get information about what's going on in their terms
not our terms Powers said.
He is currently deciding which officers would be in charge of the page if it goes through, with the goal of making sure it updates regularly and is not just there for the sake of being there.
As times change students go to the Internet for information and resources
he said. Lots of students have Facebook accounts and use it regularly.
With the reported rape that occurred near the former Baker University Center on March 18 and the sighting of registered sex offender Oren Apple in violation of his lifetime ban, Powers said his department needs to use various
resources to get the message out.
I would certainly not put all our resources into this means only and expect it to work properly
he said.
Kent Smith, vice president for Student Affairs, said it's a good idea to reach more students.
First of all
I wasn't aware
but I applaud Chief Powers for the idea. As you interview me now
I'm on Facebook to find a student
Smith said.
Powers said his concern was pushing too much information on students.
I think the university as a whole does not want to spam and desensitize them to the e-mails
but I want to reach as many students as possible
Powers said. I don't want people to have to hunt for information.,",1,News,Ryan Dunn,",",",",",","
