Representative asks for $8 million in earmarks

U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson (D-6) submitted his requests to the House Appropriations Committee, including more than $8 million in federal earmarks for the Athens area.

Wilson asked for more than $62 million for Ohio's entire 6th Congressional District for the 2010 fiscal year.

The $8,280,750 would be split among 15 different recipients, nine of which are projects affiliated with Ohio University. From Wilson's requests, OU could possibly receive $5,720,750.

The largest amount requested for OU was $2.6 million for the Distributed Power from Wastewater project, according to Wilson's Web site. The money would help by creating technology that will make military base camps more self-sufficient and more energy efficient.

There is no guarantee that OU will receive any money though, said Teri Geiger, the director of government relations for OU. The university worked with involved faculty members to come up with the numbers for the proposals.

For the 2009 fiscal year

we had about $4.7 million funded Geiger said. The money covered seven projects run through the university.

Wilson chose the nine OU proposals to recommend to the House Appropriations Committee because they fulfilled his personal guidelines. A project must encourage economic development, create employment and foster one of Wilsons's key priorities: health care, energy independence and education, a representative from Wilson's office said.

For the 2009 fiscal year Wilson also asked for about $62 million from the House Appropriations Committee. He received $8 million for the entire 6th Congressional District.

Given the tough economic times and the level of competition for projects among members of Congress I anticipate receiving much less from the appropriations committee than I'm requesting

Wilson said in a news release last Friday. At the end of the day

we have to try to help as many people as we can.
