Rising asphalt prices put brakes on repairs

Athens County workers will be repairing less mileage on the county's streets this year because of an increase in the price of asphalt and decreased revenue for gasoline and vehicle licensing.

The price of asphalt has gone up 35 cents per gallon since last year, said Deputy Engineer for Operations for Athens County Mike Canterbury at yesterday's county commissioners meeting.

Workers will probably concentrate on repairing the most heavily trafficked roads, said Commissioner President Mark Sullivan. The commissioners approved the companies Asphalt Materials and Marathon Ashland to supply asphalt.
