Vice President for Student Affairs Kent Smith ended Student Senate’s discussion of how to raise additional funding needed for this year’s Athens Beautification Day, when he volunteered $100, matching the amount needed to balance the event’s budget.
Michaela Hahn-Lawson, commissioner for off-campus life, said the event would cost no more than it has in previous years, but that because some sponsors decreased their funding, while others who had formally donated services and equipment, pulled out entirely.
“We would have been able to run under-budget, but we had increased costs because we had to pay for things like mulch, which were donated in the past,” Hahn-Lawson said. She added that she has personally donated $100 to the event.
Despite increased costs, Student Senate hopes to put on an event equivalent to those held in previous years. Smith volunteered to personally donate the needed funds after Hahn-Lawson requested that senator’s make donations.
Athens Beautification Day will take place April 19.
