Softball: 'Cats pick up 3 key wins on road

The Bobcats' quick-strike offense helped ensure that their opponents' slumps continued.

Ohio took three of four games against Toledo and Bowling Green this weekend. The Rockets have lost 10 of their last 11, while the Falcons have now dropped 10 of their last 12.

The most engaging of the three wins came on the heels of a furious four-run, two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning.

Down 6-4 and looking at a series split with the Rockets, Paige Kemezis started off the inning with a double to center field.

After another double from catcher Jordan Paden and Candace Saucedo three batters later, the Bobcats had their first lead.

Deanna Hartsough singled off of starter Shana Szypka to cap the scoring, and Saucedo earned the win in the seventh, stranding two Toledo runners. Shortshop Alexis Zambrana kept her 12-game hitting streak alive with a single in the seventh.

The goal going into this weekend was for us to win three of the four games

coach Jodi Hermanek said.

Once we laid the cards on the table for the girls they really responded well. We kept generating chances to score and kept ourselves in the game.

The Bobcats scattered 20 hits in the second game against Toledo, and added 11 in the first game, a 9-3 win.

Emily Wethington threw well in yesterday's 2-0 win over Bowling Green yesterday,

The New Palestine, Ind., native pitched a complete-game shutout as the Bobcats won the tail end of the Saturday doubleheader with the Falcons.

She fanned nine batters and yielded only three hits to give Ohio (19-18, 9-7 MAC) the win.

The Falcons won the first game of the weekend 6-4 with Melissa Bonner taking the loss.

Emily's been working really hard to develop her pitches and she's done it well and executed Paden said. There's a good trust level between us now and we can call some good pitches.

In what was a big weekend for the Bobcats and their Mid-American Conference Championship aspirations, Hermanek and her staff emphasized playing their way to get to the top of the conference.

We talked a lot about what it's going to take to win a championship and how we have to play to get there

Hermanek said.

It was a really good showing for Emily and she had really good control of her pitches and did an outstanding job keeping them off balance.
