Softball: Ohio swept in doubleheader

Deanna Hartsough provided a little lightning for the Bobcats, but it wasn't enough to match Marshall's thunder.

Hartsough was the only Bobcat to tally a hit in both games of Ohio's doubleheader against the Thundering Herd. The junior went 2-for-4 on the day with a walk.

The Bobcats dropped game one 12-0 and followed it with a 3-1 loss in game two.

Hartsough said the Bobcats weren't selective enough at the plate.

We were swinging at their pitches instead of selecting ours and driving our zones

Hartsough said. We were swinging at the change up when we shouldn't have been.

The Bobcats were in a hole early against the Thundering Herd.

Marshall designated hitter Caitlyn Jackson connected for her first home run of the season off of Bobcat starting pitcher Emily Wethington in the bottom of the first inning to give her team a 2-0 lead.

Marshall did even more damage an inning later.

The Thundering Herd sent twelve women to the plate in the inning, scoring six times.

Third baseman Kelly Neilson led off the inning with a home run. Four batters later, shortstop Alianna Telles added a home run of her own in the inning. Her three-run homer extended the Marshall lead to 6-0.

Marshall did a great job of hitting the heck out of the ball in game one coach Jodi Hermanek said. They really covered their zones.

Marshall scored in every inning but the fifth. Wethington was pulled after giving up 10 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. Candance Saucedo relieved the sophomore and allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings. That one run was the Herd's fourth home run of the game by left fielder Rachel Sofie.

I was really proud of Candance Hermanek said. She did a really good job of coming in and keeping them off balance to get the outs that she needed to get.

But we just didn't do anything to help ourselves out offensively.

Ohio came out strong offensively in the first inning of game two.

The Bobcats scored a run on a single by pitcher Melissa Bonner and managed to load the bases before a flyout.

That would be all the damage they would do however

as Ohio didn't have another runner reach third the rest of the game.

Bonner gave the Bobcats a strong performance on the mound.

After Marshall's 12-run

12-hit outburst in game one

Bonner held them scoreless through three innings.

The Thundering Herd's bats wouldn't be quieted for long.

First baseman Rebecca Gamby hit Marshall's fifth home run of the day when she connected for a two-run homer in the fourth.

Bonner finished the day with a complete game allowing three runs and nine hits.

Hermanek said the losses hurt the team's ego and pride

but little else.

We're still in great standings for what our end result is (in the conference), Hermanek said. Now we just need to fine tune the things that we need to so we can beat a team like that in the post season.",",2,Sports,Michael Lewis,28130b.jpg,",",",",","
