Softball: Sophomore carries Bobcats past RedHawks with bat, arm

Emily Wethington let everybody know that it was going to be her day from the very first inning on Friday.

Wethington was the starting pitcher for the Bobcats in their 8-2 win over Miami looking to give Ohio a big boost.

She did just that.

After walking RedHawk leadoff hitter Jordan McElroy, Wethington struck out the next three Miami batters.

The sophomore then gave herself some support as she connected for her sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the inning. The two-run shot tied her for third place on the Ohio career-home run list with 11.

Wethington broke that mark with another two-run home run in the bottom of the first in the second game of the doubleheader.

Despite the power numbers, Wethington doesn't think of herself as a home run hitter.

When I go up there

I think line drives Wethington said.

If it goes over then that's awesome.

On the mound, Wethington had Miami (26-19, 12-6) red with frustration as they couldn't put anything together off the powerful right hander.

The New Palestine, Ind., native pitched a complete game and only allowed two RedHawks to cross the plate. Wethington shut the Miami offense down through five innings, allowing only three hits. Home runs in the sixth and seventh accounted for the Miami runs.

Beating Miami was big for the team, according to Wethington.

It's a thrill actually Wethington said. We got swept by them last year so this year we had something to prove to them.

It's a really good feeling to know that we are right there.

With a 4-3 win in the second game of the doubleheader

Ohio closed the gap to one game between the two teams in the Mid-American Conference standings.

The wins were a big statement in that the Bobcats (21-20

11-9 MAC) are able to play with anybody in the MAC

according to coach Jodi Hermanek.

To know that we're a team that is going to fight all the way through against tough competitors, we are doing it at the right time, Hermanek said.

Unfortunately

the Bobcats weren't able to keep their momentum going in their games against Ball State. Shaky pitching and bad defense led to a pair of losses for the Bobcats. The Cardinals won 10-7 and 7-3
