Add one more Bobcat to the list of regional qualifiers.
Junior Cathy Udeani qualified for the NCAA regional meet in high jump at the Hillsdale Relays Friday in Hillsdale, Mich. She equaled the qualifying mark and set a personal record with her jump of 1.75 meters. She tied for second in the event.
Udeani is the fifth Bobcat to qualify for the regional meet. She joins juniors Annie Beecham and Kari Summers (5,000-meter run), Emily Amendola (hammer throw) and Bahiyjaui Allen (shot put).
Coach Clay Calkins said that it was great for Udeani to qualify, and that it was the performance of the meet.
Udeani said earlier in the week that her goal was to make it to the regional meet and set a personal record.
She has now done both, finally qualifying after coming close on multiple occasions.
Allen and senior Jessie Tanner had strong showings in the discus, as they both inched closer to the regional-qualifying mark of 47.7 meters. Allen placed fourth with a mark of 47.16 meters. Tanner placed sixth with a throw of 45.42 meters.
Allen, who has had some of her worst performances of the season in recent weeks, rested in the shot put in Hillsdale.
Calkins said earlier that she was dealing with some nagging injuries, but there were no reoccurring problems.
Senior Susan Plungis placed third in javelin with a throw of 39.94 meters. Junior Lauren Moore took seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.35 seconds.
Sophomore Kristi Sturges and senior Brittany Vinson finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the triple jump, with marks of 11.33 meters and 11.21 meters, respectively.
It was a strong performance
Calkins said. It was great preparation for (the Jessie Owens Classic) next week.
The Jessie Owens Classic will be held at Ohio State University in Columbus beginning Friday.
