that's what the administration has been telling me
Logan said. An expected 19 of the 32 unionized employees laid off by Ohio University will likely be reemployed by the school, a union official said today.
Because 19 union employees have committed to retire early - 17 by July 1 and two by Sept. 1 - the laid-off workers are expected to be rehired, said Dave Logan, president of the local chapter of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Yes that's what the administration has been telling me
Logan said.
Bill Decatur, OU's senior vice president for Finance and Administration, could not be reached for comment.
Logan said his talks with OU suggested that roughly one Facilities Maintenance employee would be rehired for each union member who retires early. He said he's hopeful the union can find 32 in all and offset the layoffs entirely.
I would never say I'm happy
but the union understands the state of our economy. Believe me
we understand
he said. It's the best of a worst-case scenario.
OU was expected to lay off about 90 administrative, classified and union employees to help offset a $15 million budget gap.
In what capacity the union employees return remains unclear, he said. The union has the right to recall a job with a pay range similar to the position that each individual recently lost, but it applies only when there is an opening of that type, Logan said.
This also leaves maintenance 32 positions short from before the cut. Problems that arrive in the evening like a clogged toilet or water line break could be difficult to take care of.
If it's a critical issue
he said. Students will have to wait until someone's called in. That could take 45 minutes.
