Victim's family sues for damages

The parents of a murdered Hocking College student have sued the man convicted of fatally stabbing their daughter, demanding monetary damages for mental anguish and medical expenses.

Rick and Deborah Blankenship sued Ronald Hendrickson II on April 8, asking for at least $25,000 - a standard minimum amount for civil cases filed in Ohio. John R. Liber, the Blankenships' attorney, said he expects the final amount to be much higher.

The loss to them

for someone that age could be quite significant Liber said. The Blankenships' daughter, Jodi, was 21 when she died.

In May, a jury found Hendrickson guilty of murder for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend, Jodi Blankenship, after an argument in April 2007. He was sentenced to life in prison but has appealed his conviction. At the time Blankenship died, both were Hocking College students living in Nelsonville.

The complaint, filed in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas, asks punitive damages, funeral and burial costs, medical expenses and mental anguish. Liber requested a jury hear the case.

Hendrickson, now in the Lebanon Correctional Institution in Lebanon, Ohio, was given a copy of the lawsuit on Monday.
