Women's Golf: Ohio falls short of top-5 finish, places 7th

The Bobcats wrapped up their season with a seventh-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Tournament this weekend in Nashport, Ohio.

Host Kent State won the tournament for the 11th straight year.

Despite not reaching its goal to finish in the top five, the team did save its best effort for last as the Bobcats shot their season-best round of 311 yesterday.

We were so close

coach Kelly Ovington said. But I was pretty happy with the 311 score.

The Bobcats finished in the top three in three of the four tournament rounds, but had a poor outing in their second round.

We saw a little glimmer of light Ovington said. But it just didn't happen for us.

Sophomore Erin Cahill led the way for the Bobcats. She posted her fourth career top-10 finish and tied her career-best round of 74, finishing in a tie for eighth place.

I hit my irons really close and it was less windy on Sunday which was helpful

Cahill said.

Junior Colleen Lienesch and senior Lindsay Bergman joined Cahill, finishing with top-30 scores.

Lienesch tied for 19th with a 329 total and Bergman tied for 29th and posted a 337 total.

After the first day of the tournament, the Bobcats finished with a 682 two-round total and stood in seventh place, and stayed there after day two's total of 325.

Although the team ended the tournament in seventh place, Ovington said she was happy with her team's performance.

I think the girls adjusted extremely well (throughout the tournament) and everyone improved and got better

Ovington said.

With the completion of her first full season as the Bobcats' coach, Ovington is optimistic heading into next season.

I am extremely excited for the future

Ovington said. The girls are already talking about wanting to start practicing for next year.

Ovington said the team plans to continue to work on the short game during the off-season and that each player is going to work on perfecting five to 10 different shots.

The team is fairly young, as it is only losing its lone senior, Lindsay Bergman.

We're really going to miss Lindsay

Ovington said. She has been an inspiration to all of us on and off the course.

With five top-10 finishes and finishing the season with their best round of the year, the Bobcats seem to be moving in the right direction.
