Baseball: Bobcats swept by Falcons

Joe Carbone has maintained the importance of winning two games every weekend in the Mid-American Conference.

But the Bobcats didn't win any of their three games against Bowling Green this weekend. Their 9-7 loss yesterday culminated the sweep.

The only other time Ohio had not won two games in a series was when they faced nationally-ranked Kent State last week. Ohio won one of the games.

They hit the ball better than we did

Carbone said. We've swept some people and now we get swept.

With the sweep, Ohio now finds itself in an unfamiliar place.

Two weeks ago, they were at the top of the conference, coming off a sweep of Akron.

Now the Bobcats are trying to hang on.

With its starting rotation decimated by injuries and illness, Carbone opted to start closer Bryce Butt yesterday against the Falcons. He had only made one previous start this season.

In that start, he was tagged with six runs in four innings in a 10-2 loss to Tennessee in March.

We stuck the guy out there who we thought would give us the best chance to win Carbone said. And it was Butt.

Butt had the Bobcats playing catchup early.

He pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs, five of which were earned. He allowed a run in the first and two in the second.

I didn't think he threw that badly

Carbone said. He got hit a little bit.

Butt was hit especially hard in the fourth.

He allowed four runs and was chased from the game.

Bowling Green left fielder Jon Berti doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by first baseman Mark Galvin. The barrage continued with singles by center fielder T.J. Blanton and shortstop Ryan Shay.

On Shay's hit, Galvin scored on an error by left fielder Adam Gecewich.

To make matters worse, first baseman Brian Hangbers homered to left center to put the Falcons up 7-0. Butt hit catcher Ryan Schlater and his day was done because he was thrown out of the game. Carbone said the umpire thought Butt was throwing at Schalter.

We were not throwing at anybody

Carbone said. That is not the case.

He was just throwing an inside fastball.

Carbone was then thrown out of the game.

While Bowling Green (23-18

13-7 MAC) racked up the runs

Ohio's offense couldn't muster much through the first six innings.

A sacrifice fly by catcher Chris Klimko that scored designated hitter Robert Maddox III was it for the Bobcats against pitcher Kacy Dwornik through six innings.

Ohio (22-19

13-8 MAC) came through with four runs in the seventh

but couldn't break through.

The offense was in much higher demand for the Bobcats in 12-9 and 13-7 losses on Friday and Saturday respectively

but the pitching couldn't keep the Bobcats in the game.,",2,Sports,Steve Gartner,28192b.jpg,",",",",","
