Drugs possibly played role in student's death

An Ohio University student who died after falling from the fourth floor of his residence hall allegedly tested positive for drugs in a hospital examination, the Franklin County coroner said.

Eric Hansen, 20, of Seven Hills, died Wednesday at Grant Medical Hospital in Columbus from multiple blunt traumas to his head and chest sustained in the fall from Weld House on South Green last Tuesday night.

The Franklin County Coroner's Office is running its own toxicology examination to determine what drugs, if any, were present in Hansen's system, said Dr. Jan Gorniak, Franklin County coroner. The report should take four to six weeks.

The office also is conducting an autopsy, which is standard procedure on all accidents, suicides and homicides, Gorniak said. Information from OU police investigations will be included in that report, which shouldn't be ready for another eight to 10 weeks, she added.

We don't have anything to add past the initial police report

OU Police Sgt. Brian Kapple said. It's still an active investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident can call OU police at 593-1911.
