Local young musicians to learn, perform at 3rd annual String Fling

Students from the Athens Community Music School and string players from around Athens will spend tomorrow learning about fiddling and showing off their skills in a concert

during the third annual String Fling.

Created by Elizabeth Braun, director of the Athens Community Music School, in 2006 the String Fling was started to promote string playing in Athens.

Established in 1979, the Community Music School provides music lessons, programs and music therapy to musicians of any age in Southeast Ohio.

The music school co-sponsors the event with the Ohio University chapter of the American String Teacher's Association, Braun said.

About 45 musicians are expected to attend the day-long event, including students from Marietta, Hilliard and Williamstown, W. Va.

Every year a different guest artist teaches lessons and workshops at the event which focus on different string techniques, Braun said.

This year's guest is Brad Phillips, an award-winning musician who specializes in bluegrass, Celtic and old-time fiddle music. He will be teaching classes on fiddling, a type of playing that involves different bow strokes and produces a different sound.

At the end of the day, the students will perform a short concert where they will demonstrate their fiddling skills.

It will be a lot of fun and Brad and his band mates will sit in and accompany the group

Braun said. Its kinds of a hoot to see the older participants and cute little ones are all up there playing.

The concert will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow in Glidden Hall, room 101.
