'Post' Editorial: Just in time

Gov. Ted Strickland recently appointed a former Bobcat, Yvette McGee Brown, to the Ohio University Board of Trustees, and not a moment too soon.

She is slated to fill some mighty small shoes, taking a spot on the board left vacant by the now departed Chairman C. Daniel DeLawder. Brown will serve a nine-year term on the board.

Brown could be a breath of fresh air that the board desperately needs. Perhaps, as a former judge, she will have the prudence to consider opinions and input from faculty and students rather than condescendingly dismissing them. Expecting these qualities seems logical, but we have been burnt too many times by our trustees.

Moreover, Brown's history as a journalism student here should give hope to the university that she will have higher regard for freedom of information than DeLawder. Even semi-regular readers of this space know that infamous quote from an e-mail he wrote this past summer.

It sickens me to think of the waste and unproductive time being spent in the name of open records and freedom of the press

he said.

We won't miss Delawder at all, but we are going to miss that quote. In fact, we do already.

Welcome back to OU, Ms. Brown.
