'Somali Pirate Peanut Soup' stirs controversy

Ohio University's West 82 food court labeled its regularly served peanut soup as Somali Pirate Peanut Soup yesterday, a joke deemed highly inappropriate by a top Dining Services official.

Displayed next to the food court's classic creamy tomato tortellini soup, Somali Pirate Peanut Soup was labeled as a vegetarian option containing a variety of vegetables, coconut milk and peanuts.

Gwyn Scott, OU's executive director of culinary and dining services, called the soup label highly inappropriate.

This is certainly not reflective of the level of professionalism we expect from Dining Services

Scott said.

She said that while the signs were being printed one employee commented that the soup should be titled Somali Pirate Soup. Scott said the soup was the regularly served peanut soup.

This is not something that anyone should be joking about and certainly not something that should be printed and displayed on a sign she said.

The title references a series of attacks on American cargo ships by Somali pirates. On April 8, Somali pirates attacked an American container ship and took Capt. Richard Phillips hostage. Phillips was released on April 12 after U.S. Navy snipers killed three of his captors.

West 82 officials removed the sign around 2:35 p.m., replacing it with a sign labeled Peanut Soup.

The sign has been removed but that doesn't make this all right

Scott said.
