Ohio University students will be collecting used electronics to benefit My Sister's Place and Kids on Campus through May 4.
The drive, in its second year, is spearheaded by the Telecommunication Systems Management Association (TSMA) and club president Russ Brocker.
The TSMA consists of students in the J. Warren McClure School of Information and Telecommunication Systems.
Cell phones will be sent to Eco-Cell, a company that recycles and refurbishes phones in environmentally-safe ways and later donates them to those in need.
Since it (was) just earth month
we're trying to go off that and do something good for the environment said Britney Grimmelsman, a spokeswoman for the McClure School.
The TSMA will receive $1 per donated phone from Eco-House and will donate proceeds to Kids on Campus, a nonprofit organization that sponsors summer and after-school activities for troubled youth.
Refurbished phones will later be donated to My Sister's Place, a shelter for abused women, to allow women who cannot afford phones or calling plans access to 911, which comes free with any cell phone.
Grimmelsman said the event received about 50 cell phones and 100 various accessories last year.
Students can donate used cell phones, chargers, beepers and accessories between noon and 3 p.m. in Baker University Center outside the fourth floor.
