Track: 6 'Cats to make run at championship bid

Some Bobcats are not ready to call it a season just yet.

Six athletes will travel to the NCAA Mideast Regional meet today and tomorrow at the University of Louisville's Cardinal Park Stadium. The top-five finishers in each event will qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

The athletes have not competed since the Mid-American Conference Championships two weeks ago. They said they are rested and ready to compete.

I plan to let it go with the flow

said junior high jumper Cathy Udeani. I'm just going to do the best that I can do.

Udeani joins juniors Annie Beecham (5,000-meter run), Kari Summers (5,000-meter run), Bahiyjaui Allen (shot put) and Emily Amendola (hammer throw) and senior Susan Plungis (javelin) as Ohio's regional qualifiers.

Allen is among the favorites in the shot put, as her mark of 16.58 meters is currently the eighth-best throw in the nation.

You have to take care of business coach Clay Calkins. The No. 2 discus thrower in the nation did not go to nationals last year so that can happen.

The importance of the meet is obvious, but that does not change the team's approach.

I haven't been thinking about it too much

Udeani said. I have to treat this as just another meet

because normally

under pressure I do badly.

The top five finishers are guaranteed a spot in the national meet. After that

the NCAA awards three at-large bids per event.

To be eligible for an at-large bid

the athlete must have finished in the top 12 of their respective events. From there

bids are given based on the best performances throughout the year.

It's a little bit confusing if you're not in the top five, Calkins said.

While the rest of the athletes are not favored in their events

anything is possible.

You don't want to rule anybody out, Calkins said. We're going to try to get as many kids beyond regionals as we can.",",2,Sports,Vince Nairn,28592a.jpg,Ohio University junior Bahiyjaui Allen competes in the hammer throw in the Ohio Open May 9.
