Track: 'Cats fail to extend season

The Bobcats will not have anybody competing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

None of the six Bobcats who competed in the NCAA Mideast Regional meet Friday and Saturday finished in the top five, officially ending the team's season.

We had some good competition

coach Clay Calkins said. We were in one of the stronger regions out of all of them.

Junior Bahiyjaui Allen, who was a favorite to make her second-straight appearance at the national meet, finished 17th with a throw of 15.05 meters.

Bahiyjaui competed well Calkins said. But those things happen sometimes.

Allen needed to finish in the top 12 to be eligible for an at-large bid. She had the eighth-best mark in the nation heading into the meet. Had she finished eighth, she would have been guaranteed a bid.

Junior Kari Summers finished 10th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:45.00. Junior Cathy Udeani finished ninth in the high jump with a jump of 1.74 meters.

Summers and Udeani are both eligible for at-large bids. Neither is expected to receive one, however. The top-five finishers at each regional meet are guaranteed bids, and only three at-large bids are given to the next best finishers nationally.

Senior Susan Plungis ended her Bobcat career by finishing 16th in the javelin with a throw of 42.09 meters. This was Plungis' second career trip to the regional meet.

(Plungis) did a great job for us while she was here Calkins said.

Junior Emily Amendola finished 25th in the hammer throw and junior Annie Beecham did not finish in the 5,000-meter run because she was injured, rounding out the team's competitors.

Ohio will now turn its attention to next season as five of the six regional qualifiers return.

Failing to qualify for nationals will not bring down the team's successful season, Calkins said.

Some wanted more

Calkins said. But just to make it to this level is an honor.
