Your Turn: Voting for student senate easy, worthwhile

To my prospective constituents,

This Thursday, May 14, you will see my name on the senate ballot for College of Education Senator. I am running with the Unite! party and aspire to be a means of the change you want to see on this campus. I also wish to leave the aspects of our university that you find most necessary to remain unchanged. Unite! believes that student voice is the most important aspect in governing a university and each candidate will actively pursue the students' opinions and act on what they hear.

As an OU scholar and future educator, I will promote the allocation of funds toward scholarship. As an environmental studies student, I will suggest more adequate recycling and waste disposal systems on campus, such as available composting. I believe that dining halls with an abundance of left-over food should donate to local food pantries. In addition, I will work hard until the students of my college, as well as every student I come in contact with, have voiced an opinion on campus issues.

In the past senate election, about 13 percent of the student body submitted a vote. This is an unacceptable turnout rate for senate elections. After all, we are meant to run an active, participatory democracy which requires student input first and foremost! Unite! wants to give you a reason to voice your opinions by giving you your desired results. I'm urging you all to check your OU e-mail on Thursday, follow the link, and VOTE! It will take five minutes of your day, but will end in your ultimate involvement in the happenings at Ohio University. Vote UNITE!
