The Athens Humane Society revamped their kitten adoption program last Saturday by holding their first event since August of last year.
The event was held at The Market on State, 1002 East State St., from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The 15 kittens up for adoption were sold for $75 if they were younger than six months old, and $50 if they were older than six months.
Athens Humane Society board member Karen Mammone was working the event, and said that helping to get the kittens new homes was the main reason for her helping out.
We have most of the kittens because people don't spay or neuter their cats
Mammone said. People really do need to spay or neuter their pets that's one thing that we have been trying to stress to people.
Mammone said that the kittens that they have up for adoption come from anywhere and any situation.
We have strays cats that have been dropped off
everything
Mammone said. This is the time of year that kittens are born
so we get them mostly from people who are moving or just can't take care of them.
A normal adoption event can have anywhere from 10 to 30 kittens up to adopt, with the average adoption rate being around five kittens, said Humane Society President Arianna Rinaldi-Eickenberg. This event resulted in two adoptions with two other families taking questionnaires about specific animals.
We didn't get as many adoptions as we may have liked
but we handed out education about us to a lot of people which is always good
Rinaldi-Eickenberg said.
All of the kittens up for adoption are feline leukemia tested, spayed and neutered, and have their first set of vaccination shots.
The Athens Humane Society has no shelter of its own, resulting in staff members having to take the kittens home.
We are constantly taking cats home
Mammone said. We pay for a lot of it too since the society doesn't have a lot of money.
The next adoption event will be held on July 25, with the society attempting to hold events on the last Saturday of every month.
