After facing a tough early season schedule, Ohio got a much-needed win against Robert Morris on Friday.
The Bobcats beat the Colonials 2-0 and dominated every facet of the game. They accumulated 34 shots and didn't allow Robert Morris to have a single shot.
Coach Neil Macmillan said he liked the team's effort, but would have liked to see more goals result from all the scoring opportunities.
One thing that gets lost in it is that their goal keeper had an NCAA record for saves
Macmillan said. It's almost a little disappointing to be involved in that record but I was still extremely happy with the opportunities we created today.
After being stagnant on offense last weekend against Virginia and Ohio State, the Ohio offense filled up the stat sheet. Katherine Ballard led the way for the Bobcats with a goal and 11 shots, nine of which were on goal. Katelyn Shelley scored the other goal for the Bobcats, and tallied three shots on the day.
We just went back to basic hockey and the girls executed extremely well today
Macmillan said.
The team had 18 shots in the first half, but couldn't convert until the beginning of the second half when Ballard found the net. It was the junior's third goal of the season, making her the team's leading scorer on the year.
I thought I did a good job of creating shots
Ballard said. I would have liked to put a few more in the goal though.
The 34 shots was the team's highest total of the year. The Bobcats came into the game with only 39 shots for the entire season.
The defense played exceptionally well, shutting out Robert Morris and not allowing the Colonials to fire a shot. Macmillan was especially happy with the defense's performance.
That was fantastic
Macmillan said. The general idea going in was not to give them easy opportunities
and we certainly did that.
Defender Nina Bruno agreed with her coach.
It was a good performance
Bruno said, Just the fact that we didn't give up a shot or a defensive corner is great within itself.
The win is the first for Ohio since Sept. 4. They lost three-straight matches against ranked opponents.
Ballard said the win should help the team get back on the right track.
I think if we take what we did today into the rest of the season then we'll definitely be successful.
