OU students stump for health care reform

As the country heatedly debates comprehensive health care reform, some Ohio University students hope to gain support for the Obama administration via Organizing for America ––a new branch of the College Democrats.

“We’re mainly trying to get the word out and collect signatures,” said Brian Peters, a OFA community organizer and OU sophomore.

The group was founded to rival a similar group run by the College Republicans, and members hope to increased visibility will up membership.

“We spent the first month putting up flyers around campus to get our name out there,” said OFA member Meghan Mchugh.

The group will man a booth outside of Baker University Center everyday until October 2 to distribute informational pamphlets and allow interested students to sign their reform petition.

The petition ––which expresses support for President Barack Obama’s proposed health care plans ––will be mailed to state and national leaders.

OFA hopes to collect 2,000 signatures by the end of November and is offering the chance to win a free burrito from Big Mamma’s Burritos to everyone who signs.

Mchugh added that OFA is looking into hosting a public forum held by at The Front Room Coffeehouse later this year.
