Post Letter: Discussion with writer punctuates documentary showing

Documentary film can be an incredibly in-depth and compelling method of storytelling, and Live from Bethlehem is a prime example. The film chronicles the everyday struggles of the only independent news network broadcasting from within Palestine and the occupied territories, the Ma'an News Agency, in a way that is both stirring and humbling for those of us who often take for granted our Western conveniences. It is an occasion all too rare that we have a chance to take an earnest and insightful look into cultures foreign to our own, and Live from Bethlehem gives us a chance to do just that. The Society of Professional Journalists will be hosting a free screening of the film tonight at 7 p.m. in the Anderson Auditorium, Scripps 111. Along with the screening, the Emmy-nominated screenwriter and documentarian behind the film, Matt Sienkiewicz, will be present and available for questions as well as a discussion of the film immediately following the screening. This screening is a unique opportunity to hear the voices coming from the Middle East so often marginalized by our media filters, and to speak directly to one of the documentarians present at every stage of making the film. Please join us for this opportunity to look both around the world and within ourselves for a more nuanced understanding of what separates and unites us all.
