Soccer: Ohio lacks MAC luster

The Bobcats finished the first weekend of conference play winless.

Ohio lost its first game of the Mid-American Conference schedule, as Central Michigan beat the Bobcats 4-0 Friday. They turned it around yesterday and played Eastern Michigan to a 0-0 draw in overtime.

The Chippewas (7-3, 2-0 MAC) started the attack early Friday. Senior forward Molly Gerst scored in the third minute to put CMU ahead, and that was all the Chippewas needed.

Gerst added goals in the 24th and 62nd minutes, and senior forward Amanda Waugh netted one in the 33rd minute as CMU tallied 15 shots on the day.

Ohio had 13 shots but only five were goals.

The Bobcat defense faltered, but the game was not as lopsided as the score would suggest, coach Stacy Strauss said.

It wasn't a 4-0 game in terms of the shots on goal and the possession

Strauss said. But they just created very dangerous opportunities and finished them very well.

Yesterday was a different story.

After two 45-minute halves and two 10-minute overtime periods, Ohio (3-5-1, 0-1-1 MAC) pitched its first shutout of the season - but still didn't get the win.

The defense showed improvement and limited Eastern Michigan's chances. The Eagles managed only 11 shots in 110 minutes of game time.

We did a lot better this time with communicating sophomore midfielder Lauren Burke said. I thought we all played well together today.

Senior goalkeeper Jess MacLean made four saves, and collected every loose ball around the net to keep the Eagles(4-2-4, 0-0-2) off the scoreboard.

It feels really good to have a full not even 90 but 110 (minutes) from our defense

MacLean said. The effort was there

and it's a great start of what's to come.

While the defense stepped up yesterday, the offense could not find the net. Ohio did not score in either game this weekend.

Our defense was a lot better and now if we can just connect to the offense

I think we'll be golden

Burke said.

Ohio had its chances yesterday, but could not finish the attack with a goal.

We have moments of brilliance but we don't maintain that level for the entire game

Strauss said.

The Bobcats will continue MAC play next weekend as they go on the road to play Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.
