After six years of generating punk electricity in Athens, Amish Electric Chair has signed a contract with a large record label.
Geykido Comet Records, located in Las Vegas, has signed the band to a one-record deal, with an option for additional releases in the future, said Amish Electric Chair bassist John Sava.
The punk label, which features artists Peelander-Z, East Arcadia and Four Deadly Questions, often serves as a stepping stone to larger, more prominent labels, Sava said.
After recording its new EP, Straight No Chaser, the band was hesitant to send a press kit to Geykido Comet Records because of daunting information on the label's Web site, Sava said.
On their Web site it says that the odds of getting signed to the label are less than becoming a 'millionaire rock star
' he said.
Despite beating the odds, the band is not interested in stereotypical rock star status, a message displayed on Straight No Chaser, said guitarist and vocalist Neil Tuuri.
I hate rock stars I hate long introductions to songs I hate guitar solos
I hate dumb 20-minute breakdowns. We try to write songs with no bullshit. The song starts
you get your point across
you end it and start the next song. It's like a shot. Straight
no chaser
he said.
The EP is set for release on Nov. 16, and the band's first tour under the label name will begin December 1, Sava said.
The band, which previously toured about six weeks out of the year, now hopes to be on the road about six months of the year, Tuuri said.
The time commitment has made Sava rearrange his plans for graduating from Ohio University, he said.
I think it's necessary (to leave school). I only have three quarters left and you can always go back to school. But going on tour and being on the road all the time for a record label and being a signed band
that doesn't happen for everybody
he said.
A lot of people throw these opportunities away
Tuuri added. They get married or have kids or do something else that's stupid. Then their whole lives they are like
