A 3-year-old girl died on Thursday from what the Athens County coroner said could have been the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu.
Test results that will reveal if she had swine flu will not be complete for up to seven weeks, Coroner Harold C. Thompson said.
She was initially diagnosed with Type A influenza at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
We're waiting for the results; all testing for the flu is for influenza A or B
Thompson said. If they test positive since it is prior to the onset of the seasonal flu the Centers for Disease Control said it's presumptive it is H1N1.
Ninety-nine percent of circulating influenza strains are most likely H1N1, Thompson said.
Thompson said that though some H1N1 cases can turn deadly, he didn't think the virus would claim a lot of lives.
Well
it has the potential to cause death
yes; I won't say it will cause a lot
but it has the potential
he said.
