Columbus man arraigned for Mill St. threat

A judge held a Columbus man on $5,000 bail yesterday for threatening a Mill Street resident with a pistol this weekend.

Municipal Judge William Grim also ordered Lee Khoeum, 21, of 78 Stevens Ave. to avoid alcohol and guns.

Khoeum threatened to kill Brad Kerns at 50 Mill St. Saturday afternoon, police said. Khoeum initially threatened Kerns while intoxicated at the house, left and returned five minutes later with a 9mm pistol in a duffle bag, according to court records.

Police arrested Khoeum for aggravated menacing, intoxication and possessing a weapon while under disability after a neighbor called 911. Police transferred Khoeum to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

For a person to be convicted of possessing a weapon under disability, he or she must be caught carrying a weapon and be either a fugitive, mentally incompetent, in danger of drug addiction or addicted to drugs or alcohol, according to state law. Police cite the drug and alcohol section of the law in the complaint.

Khoeum has an extensive criminal record in Franklin County that dates back to 2006 and includes at least two alcohol offenses, according to court records. Saturday marked his first arrest in Athens County.

Because possessing a weapon while under disability is a felony, county prosecutors will try the case. They must obtain a grand jury indictment before taking Khoeum to trial.

As of 6 p.m. yesterday, Khoeum had not posted bail and remained in the regional jail.

Khoeum will return to Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing 2 p.m. on Oct. 27.

Neither Kerns nor the arresting officer could be reached for comment. Khoeum was unavailable for comment.
