Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit had faculty senators over for a reception at her house last night, an event meant to build collegiality.
More than 30 senators and two members of the provost's staff were at the event, which lasted about two hours. Conversation revolved around the provost's new shared governance blog, Faculty Senate's year so far and general social conversation
according to Benoit.
Benoit said she was pleased with the turnout and the discussion.
We had good attendance the food was terrific great conversation
she said, adding the goal was to provide an environment for informal interaction with the senate. I've said in other forums that I'm working on developing that relationship with senate and this was one of many ways of working on that relationship ... I think it was really positively received and I think that this was an important step.
Faculty senators also enjoyed the reception, according to Senate Chairman Joe McLaughlin, who said it was helpful for the provost, but also for senators.
I think it was good for her - I think she met some faculty members she hadn't met before
he said. And frankly
I think it was good for us as a senate because we don't all know each other and sometimes we only see each other in those public meetings and those aren't always the greatest forums to get to know each other.
The reception was entirely informal - no one gave speeches, there was just conversation. McLaughlin said he's not sure how or if that will impact the provost's presentations at senate meetings in the future, but it can't hurt.
Baker University Center catered the event and the Ohio University Foundation covered the costs.
Benoit said the menu focused on hors d'oeuvres, including fruit, meatballs and a chicken appetizer. She also served dessert.
The meatballs were particularly good
she said. McLaughlin agreed.
This was the first time, at least in recent Ohio University history, that a sitting provost invited the whole Faculty Senate to their home for such an event. Benoit came to OU in July and said that fostering a collegial atmosphere is one of her priorities.
