Group to show 3 films to raise money for earthquake victims

Although an Oct. 1 earthquake struck the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, its shock waves were felt among the Ohio University international student community.

Students from the Southeast Asian Student Association are rasing funds to help clean up the aftermath of the earthquake, which had an estimated force of 7.6 on the Richter Scale.

The group sold rice cakes and other Asian-themed goods yesterday in Baker University Center.

Proceeds from the sales will go through Nurani Dunia, an organization helping with rebuilding efforts, senior Adila Prasodjo , a member of the student association, said.

We hope we can raise awareness and gain support for the people of Indonesia

Prasodjo said, adding that many students had been supportive.

International graduate students will also screen three films in the Baker University Center Theatre today to raise money.

Graduate student Widyasari Listyowulan and Prasodjo are the core organizers for the event, but Graduate Student Senate has offered to help publicize it, GSS President Tracy Kelly said.

We support it wholeheartedly and we hope it receives maximum attendance Kelly said.

The theatre will show The Photograph from 4 to 6 p.m., Berbagi Suami from 6 to 8 p.m. and Jermal from 8 to 10 p.m. tonight. The organizers are asking for a $2 donation from attendees.
