After an unsatisfactory 36 holes, Ohio is in 8th place at the Xavier Invitational.
As a team, Ohio shot 584(+8) on the day. Mid-American Conference opponent Akron is leading the tournament with a 567(-9).
Sophomore Paul Grauer 140(-4) is sitting in 3rd place overall. His scores did not surprise coach Bob Cooley.
Paul has been practicing really well
Cooley said. Today he did a good job of keeping the ball
in play.
Not every Bobcat played as well as Grauer, though. Coach Cooley was not happy with some of the mental mistakes his team made.
Penalty shots did us in today he said. There were lots of penalty shots
lots of unforced errors.
Tim Gusweiler 143(-1) also cracked the top 15. He is currently tied with seven other golfers in 14th place.
Team captain Chad Warmbein 144(E) is right behind Gusweiler. He added one stroke in the morning, but was able to battle back and drop that stroke in the afternoon. He is in 21st.
Freshman Phil Gieseter, who is coming off a strong finish at the Yestingsmeier Invitational, had a rough day on the course yesterday. He shot 78 in the first round and 79 in the second. These scores landed him at +13, tied for 61st place.
Russell Budd of DePaul and Lucas Murray of Akron are the two golfers ahead of Grauer after day one. Budd is at 137(-7) and Murray is at 138(-6).
Atlantic-10 squad Xavier is playing well in its event. The Musketeers are in 3rd place at 573(-3). They are one of three schools with two golfers in the top 10. Akron and Marquette are the other two.
If the Bobcats are able to play smart today, Coach Cooley sees them moving up in the standings.
We can finish anywhere from 4th to 10th
he said. Right now
there are lots of teams who are bunched together.
Hopefully, the Bobcats will be able elevate their game today and leave that pack of teams in the standings behind.
