A New Marshfield man arrived at the Athens courthouse yesterday to be greeted by campus police who arrested him for a separate charge of robbing a student Sunday.
New Marshfield resident Bryon C. Ely, 21, of 3932 Railroad St. was charged with aggravated robbery and was held on a $50,000 bail, according to court documents.
Ely appeared in court yesterday on another theft charge, and when police heard of his hearing they arrested him at the courthouse, OU Police Chief Andrew Powers said.
Ely and Nicholas Dowler, 20, allegedly stole an OU student's purse behind McCracken Hall early Sunday morning, police said.
Victim Kendall C. Coombs' told police a man snatched her purse after flashing what looked like a box cutter and jumped into a truck driven by another man. The victim's credit card was then used at the Speedway on Richland Avenue.
Police do not know who drove the truck and who snatched the purse, Powers said.
We still have to pin down those details
he added.
Powers declined to say how Ely was identified other than interviews.
Dowler turned himself in after police issued a warrant for his arrest. He is incarcerated at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail under a $55,500 bail for the robbery charge. His pre-trial is set for Oct. 15.
Dowler told Judge William Grim that he is bad off drugs during the arraignment.
Dowler's criminal record dates back to 2007 and also includes a theft charge. Ely has five driving-related offenses dating back to 2007.
