Women's Golf: Finishing holes proves difficult for Bobcats

After the first round of the All-Ohio Invitational yesterday, the four individuals competing for Ohio found themselves grouped together in the middle of the field.

The tournament held at Ohio State's Scarlet Course in Columbus is one that only features individual competition.

No team scores are tallied at the event, and the Bobcats said the tournament offers a more laid-back feel.

It's kind of just a fun tournament

sophomore Meryl Weaver said. Because there aren't any team scores it feels just like a 'show up and have play' event.

It's a different atmosphere than what we've been used to.

Leading the scoring for the Bobcats is junior Erin Cahill. Cahill fired a 12-over-par 83 in the first round.

Following Cahill are both Weaver and senior Colleen Lienesch both shooting 15-over-par 86 on the day. Rounding out the scoring for the Bobcats is junior Jordan Fesh who shot a 16-over-par 87.

I was really happy with my drives, Weaver said I didn't miss any fairways all day. That was really big for my confidence.

My problem was in and around the greens. We all had a lot of trouble in the sand today. The course had really deep bunkers. Avoiding them was hard

but figuring out a way to get out of them with as little damage as possible was even harder.

Consistency throughout the team has been a problem all season, Weaver said.

We all had problems maintaining consistent swings

Weaver said. Once we started out (with) problems we all were on a bogey train that we couldn't get off.

Committing to putts on the slick greens at OSU's notoriously difficult Scarlet Course gave the Bobcats trouble.

We all had problems committing

Weaver said. If you don't commit to putts here it will end up being a big deal.

We've seemed to struggle all year with greens at

championship level courses like this one.

The Bobcats will conclude play tomorrow with 18 holes. The shotgun start begins at 11 a.m.,",2,Sports,Noah Meyers,",",",",",","

The Bobcats (8-8

6-2 MAC) fell to the Blue Devils 1-0 on Saturday afternoon

but came back yesterday to beat Central Michigan (4-12

2-6 MAC) 5-0.

Marcy Dull led the way for Ohio yesterday with three goals. Her first two goals came off corners. Both scores were from deep in the scoring circle and came off hard slap hits by the senior.

The third goal came late in the second half. Katelyn Shelley led a Bobcat fast break and passed it to Dull at the last moment. Dull knocked it in to complete the hat trick.

Getting a hat trick to me is a team goal, Dull said. Obviously, all of them were assisted and without my teammates I wouldn't have been able to score them.

Dull's offensive performance was indicative of the day for the Bobcats. The offense flowed smoothly all afternoon

and ended up generating 22 shots.

We knew we had to move the ball and we worked on that this week, coach Neil Macmillan said. Putting as many shots on target as we did gives you an opportunity to score.

The Bobcats could have had even more than five scores. Dull and Katherine Ballard both hit the goal post on quality shots.

Defensively

Ohio also played well. The defense only allowed five shots
