Locals kids to come together, collaborate about Kwanzaa

Local elementary school students will soon get the chance to learn about a holiday in an environment different than the regular classroom.

First grade students from East and West Elementary Schools in Athens will be participating in K is for Kwanzaa at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Baker University Theater Lounge and Multicultural Center.

K is for Kwanzaa is an event hosted by the Black Student Cultural Programming Board that teaches the students about different aspects of Kwanzaa.

We'd just like to basically try to teach them about the history and the principles of Kwanzaa

said Alicia Boards, the board's adviser.

Students will learn these through doing crafts pertaining to Kwanzaa, learning an African dance, and listening to stories.

Mark Wright, a senior studying media management and the president of BSCPB, said this event will be a chance to educate students in a fun environment.

Approximately 75 students are expected to attend this year, making K is for Kwanzaa an opportunity for BSCPB to outreach with the local youth in the schools Boards said.

Although this event is for the students, anyone is welcome to stop by. This is the BSCPB's last Kwanzaa-related event for the year.
