OU receives 7,000 H1N1 vaccines

Ohio University received 7,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine Tuesday and will hold four separate H1N1 vaccination clinics today through Sunday.

The clinics - open to every OU employee and student - are free and require no pre-registration, according to a university-wide e-mail.

OU will hold clinics in Perks Hall room 14 on Wednesday and Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The last clinic will take place on Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Walter Hall Rotunda.

The best way to protect yourself is to get the vaccination

said David Hopka, assistant vice president of Safety and Risk Management.

OU administered about 166 doses of the vaccine yesterday and expects similar turnouts for the clinics held during the workweek.

We hope to get a much stronger demand this weekend Hopka said.

The H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu is a new strain of the seasonal flu. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, vomiting and fatigue.

News of the shipment came less than a week after Athens City-County Health Department loaned OU about 400 doses of the H1N1 vaccine, which allowed the university to hold free vaccination clinics Friday and Saturday last week.

OU borrowed the doses because it had not received any since October, Hopka said, adding that few people turned out for these clinics because they were restricted to specific groups. It is unknown when OU will receive more doses of the vaccine, he said.

Athens health department will also hold two vaccination clinics this week.

Children ages six months to nine years old who need a booster shot and anyone ages 18 to 23 years old can receive a vaccination on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the health department. The department will vaccinate anyone over 50 years of age on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., according to its Web site. Appointments are required for the clinics.
