Athens County Auditor Jill Thompson announced yesterday she will be running for re-election in 2010.
Thompson, who has been the county auditor since 2000, said her job is to be a watchdog of the government, and she hopes to continue her efforts with re-election.
I believe the taxpayers have a right to know what they're taxed
why they're taxed and how they're taxed she said.
Auditors try to institute internal control and provide the proper oversight of tax laws, Thompson said.
I often tell my staff they don't work for me they work for the people.
A wave of interest in county government reform has swept Ohio in light of scandals in northern counties; however, Athens County currently has a stable government, Thompson said.
If re-elected, Thompson said she plans to focus more on increased collaboration and efficiency.
I have been very successful in reaching across the aisle. Often
when people feel free to bring up their own ideas and work together
better ideas (come from that collaboration)
Thompson said.
Although no one else has yet to throw in his or her hat, Bill Bias, Athens County Democratic Party chairman, said his party will announce its candidate sometime next week.
I think it's better to have opposition because it keeps (elected officials) accountable
Thompson said.
Recently, peers elected Thompson as President of the County Auditor's Association of Ohio, she said.
Jill is widely respected by auditors all over the state
said Richard Vedder, a distinguished professor of economics at Ohio University.
