About 35 students and faculty members joined a lunch date with the provost yesterday afternoon to ask questions and voice concerns about the university and state budget crisis.
State support is seriously declining
said Pam Benoit, Ohio University's executive vice president and provost, adding she has asked university planning units to prepare scenarios for a five to 10 percent cut in funding.
Benoit launched a Web site, ohio.edu/budget/feedback.cfm, in December to solicit suggestions for strategic budget cuts from faculty, staff and students. It will remain open for submissions until next month.
The upcoming transition from quarters to semesters also was discussed. Students asked about the effects of the transition on tuition and graduation time.
We've put together an oversight committee to look at some of these issues Benoit said, adding that the transition is on target.
Benoit also fielded questions about academic restructuring as well as online courses.
The discussion, organized by Student Senate, was Benoit's first student lunch since becoming provost in July.
She's one of our most important administrators said Jesse Neader, senate's Academic Affairs commissioner. It's important to have students engaged and giving her feedback.
Neader said Student Senate is interested in holding future events with other faculty members.
