Breaking: Democratic Chairwoman Gwinn resigns

Athens County's top Democrat resigned today, one day after a judge ruled she lied about campaign finances.

Prosecutors said County Democratic Party Chairwoman Susan Gwinn lied about $27,500 in campaign contributions during her 2008 run for county prosecutor. In September 2009 a jury indicted Gwinn for two counts of falsification, unauthorized use of property, money laundering and two counts of theft.

A judge found Gwinn guilty of falsification, a first-degree misdemeanor, but not guilty of the other charges. Falsification carries a maximum of six months in prison.

It's my understanding that what she has been found guilty of is not the level of an offense to require her to step down and but she said she thought it would be best for the party

said Athens City Council President Bill Bias a Democrat.

Bias spoke with Gwinn personally about her resignation he said.

Gwinn declined to comment.
