Date Doctor David Coleman, also known as the real-life Hitch
is returning to Ohio University to speak at 8 tonight in Baker Ballroom. He has been honored 12 times as National Speaker of the Year, has been featured in USA Today, US Weekly and CNN, and has made several books and CDs from his relationship advice. The successful film Hitch was based on his career.
I look ... more like Kevin James than Will Smith but it was Will Smith who played me Coleman said.
The OU Campus Involvement Center is bringing Coleman's program, Making Relationships Matter
to Ohio University for $3,500.
The Post's Jessie Cadle spoke with Coleman about the duties of a date doctor, what to expect from his program and his relationship advice for college students.
The Post: What actually is a date doctor, and what is your job as such?
Coleman: I just got off the phone with a client ... and I was helping him with his relationship, and I also do about 200 shows a year. I basically cover ... dating, relationships, romance, sex ... in a very fun format that only takes about an hour and a half, but people will feel like they have only been sitting there for 15 minutes.
The Post: How did you become the Date Doctor?
Coleman: When I was a sophomore in college (at Bowling Green State University) I could go out on a given night and effortlessly meet women, but my friends could not. ... I started to give them advice and it started to work. ... By the time I was a junior and senior my legend grew. ... People were going out with me to meet other people ... and then I became a speaker like I am right now.
The Post: What can people expect from your presentation?
Coleman: When people come to the show, they'll find out that I am brutally honest. I'm not the most PC speaker in the world, but they'll probably laugh the whole time. When they leave ... they can immediately put into practice what I talk about. ... I could send you thousands of e-mails from people who have thanked me ... hundreds of people who have invited me to their wedding because they met because of my shows.
The Post: What advice would you give to college students looking for relationships?
Coleman: College students have a little bit better chance than the common person in the world because they have the chance to see people over and over again. ... That doesn't happen in real life. ... You have to join activities ... co-ed especially. ... The more chances you give yourself to meet people, the better.
