Paul Marshall is the Bobcats' undisputed number-one goalie, and will likely start every game until the end of the season. But next year, things will be vastly different.
The senior from Orland Park, Ill., is in his final year at Ohio, leaving a question mark in the pipes for next season.
Patrick Morse, Zaid Alzaid and Scott Karas are three current goalies and potential candidates to replace Marshall, but they have a combined seven games of experience and only one of them (Morse) is an upperclassman.
Because of the situation we're in here
because I know who the guy in front of me is and because I know what's going on it doesn't really get to me that I'm not starting Morse said. Morse has played a total of six games during three years at Ohio and has not had a defined starting role since his freshman year of high school.
He has allowed four goals on 66 shots as a Bobcat.
It's bad luck for me that Paul Marshall's here
the best goalie in the ACHA
he said. But I feel ready - that I could start for most teams right now.
Karas is a freshman with only one game under his belt. He earned a victory against the Goderich Sailors Oct. 24, allowing two goals on 12 shots.
I was just happy to make the team
Karas said. I wasn't expecting to play at all. When Coach said I was actually going to play a game
I was like
'Oh wow
this is great.'
Karas' last starting role was in high school. He frequently studies Marshall's play to learn lessons from one of the program's most successful goalies.
I watch (Marshall) a lot in practice and games
what he does
how he keeps his temper down
