Ohio's track team had its first meet of the indoor season over the weekend, competing with a handful of other Ohio schools at the Buckeye Classic in Columbus.
Given that it was the first time his athletes had competed in weeks, coach Clay Calkins was slow to criticize his squad.
It was a bit of a rough day for us
but you can't be too hard on the team Calkins said.
The first meet back can be trying and we're going to take this with a grain of salt. This meet was a good gauge for our team.
One of the standouts for the Bobcats was junior jumper Cathy Udeani. She placed first in the high jump with a jump of 1.65 meters.
Other than Udeani, nobody really had a notable showing. Senior Bahiyjaui Allen, a thrower who has had great success in the past, did not participate in the event.
Calkins said that she has been dealing with some injury issues and will be out for at least two weeks.
A number of freshmen made the trip and they performed as well as could be expected, Calkins said.
This meet was good for the youngsters because now they have that first one under their belts
he said. The first one is out of the way.
The Buckeye Classic had the feeling of a tune-up event for the Bobcats. It was a low-key meet that did not feature many teams.
Ohio did not have any earth-shattering accomplishments, but nothing happened that would be a cause for concern for Calkins.
The Bobcats will compete in their next event on Saturday when the team travels to Bowling Green for the Women's Challenge.
