National conference waltzes to Athens in March

The Ohio University School of Dance has an eventful winter season planned, culminating with the American College Dance Festival Association regional conference, to be hosted on campus Mar. 19-22.

About 520 students studying dance at 31 universities across the country will meet to participate in master classes and performances. Professionals at the conference will evaluate 40 pieces of choreography created by students, faculty and guest artists, said co-coordinator and Department Administrator Teresa Holland.

Preparations are also underway for the annual Winter Dance Concert March 5 and 6. Rehearsals for two pieces choreographed by guest artists are in progress; five more dances by faculty members have yet to be set.

School of Dance Director Madeleine Scott is looking forward to seeing Noumenon performed for the second time since last Spring Quarter.

Scott said Noumenon is the piece that originally sparked her interest in dance.

I was in theater

and I saw that dance. It was the most startling thing to me. It's so beautifully sculptural Scott said. I think seeing it on the MemAud stage is going to be fabulous.

The other is a new piece choreographed by award-winning choreographer Kun-Yang Lin, highly regarded as one of Taiwan's best.

It's not a very long piece but it's one of those really intense pieces. There's a lot that happens in a very short period of time

Scott said.

The school is also preparing several smaller productions, such as an improvisational jam session featuring three groups Feb. 5.

Participants include the School of Dance improvisation class, the Performance Improvisation Ensemble from The Ohio State University and Like You Mean It, a professional trio featuring visiting professor Adriana Durant.

Improvisation is a technique that takes years of practice, Durant said.

We have nothing. We literally start with an impulse

and then we build on that

she said.
