Shootout: Student films to premiere Sunday

Each of 33 student teams has only 48 hours this weekend to write, film, produce and edit a three- to five-minute film. The public can view the completed films for free at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

The annual 48-Hour Shoot Out competition, sponsored by the Ohio University School of Media Arts and Studies, asks each team to produce a film in a randomly assigned genre. Each team is also assigned a line of dialogue and prop.

Genres range from Man vs. Nature to Film Noir, while lines of dialogue from last year included You look like Helen Keller and Clean up on aisle three

said co-producer Meg Mealy, a junior studying video production.

The teams, mostly composed of students from the School of Media Arts and Studies, will employ actors, extras and musicians from outside the college as they compete against time and each other to win one of four cash prizes.

Most of the participating students are going to be doing this for the rest of their lives Mealy said. You can really see the passion come out in all of their videos. They love this.

First place receives $200, second place receives $100 and third place receives $75. The best entirely freshman and sophomore team will receive $100. The prizes will be awarded at the end of Sunday's premiere.

Students receive their assignments Friday at 6:30 p.m. and must turn in their productions to Mealy by 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

As crazy as it sounds it's so fun to stay up that long

Mealy said.
